Who is Imogen Heap?

Imogen Heap has been making music since her teens.

When she was a teenager, Imogen Heap had one solo album, that didn't really go anywhere until later in her career. After the release of her debut album, Imogen Heap teamed up with music maestro Guy Sigsworth, who as a duo called themselves Frou Frou - here they produced a very successful, one and only released album, Details.

When Imogen Heap and Guy Sigsworth mutually split separate ways, Immi (as known to her fans) went on to produce her second solo album Speak for Yourself, gaining huge notoriety amongst peers and critics, producing her best known track Hide and Seek.

Imogen Heap then went on to create her third solo album Ellipse and is now creating her fourth album, one track at a time, using fan interaction to bounce ideas and inspiration.

In this lens, I want to share with you my favourite Imogen Heap tracks, and explain why this lady is a phenomenal musician, but not just that, why her creativity knows no bounds, and thus, explain why Imogen Heap has legions of dedicated fans across the world.

I first discovered Imogen Heap, when she was in the band Frou Frou (which consisted of her and Guy Sigsworth, a legend of a musician, having worked with artists such as Seal, Bjork, and Alanis Morissette). I used to work in a bookshop, and they used to play our music, as long as it was ambient, classical or non-offensively un-mainstream. One of my colleagues would always put on Frou Frou, and I fell in love it.

Upon research into their other stuff, sadly they only made one album, which was more of a musical collaboration between two musicians, rather than a band. Imogen Heap went on to record more solo material.

The first solo song I heard by Imogen Heap (or Immi, as she is sometimes known), was Goodnight and Go, recommended to me by a friend. From her second solo album, Speak for Yourself, and I haven't looked back...

You might recognise Imogen Heap's music, because she features on a lot of films and TV shows. For instance - The OC, Heroes, and most notably, Garden State, which is claimed to be the film that made her even more popular in the states.

I don't think I can rave about Frou Frou's album enough. It was the first time I ever heard Imogen Heap's voice. The music is catchy and unlike anything you would have heard before.

This album deserves to heard by every ear across the planet :D

Regarding soundtracks catapulting Imogen Heap to fame, most notably the film, Garden State, which is claimed by some to be the film that made her even more popular in the states...Well, who knows, but here's the song.

Imogen Heap went on to record more solo material. She had one solo, highly acclaimed, but very rare (you can only buy it on Amazon or Ebay for a lot of money, as it never had a commercial, official release) album before Frou Frou.

This album's title has nothing to do with Apple - it's not an "iMegaphone" - it's "I Megaphone".

Ok, this is an interesting one. Not only does this song bring back lots of lovely memories for me, but it's one I associate with writing.

Back in 2008, whilst I was in Columbus, Ohio - I had just discovered Imogen (or Immi, as some fans refer to her) Heap's solo material. I listened to the album constantly, and especially this track "Just For Now". It was around the time I first started playing with hub pages too - I used to listen to it whilst I laboured over my Rihanna and Hairspray pages (weird how you can remember things like that?).

It was also around Halloween, so I would listen to it on my iPod as I took walks around the neighbourhood, with their houses adorned with pumpkins and autumnal colours. The song's lyric also includes "this time year, leave all our hopelessnesses aside", which always make me smile, as it's true for Halloween, let's have fun, winter and Christmas is on the way etc.

In 2010, I was lucky enough to see Imogen Heap perform at the Royal Albert Hall (it was amazing), and she sang this song, we us (the audience) singing the backing. It was a fantastic experience, so much fun, and such a lovely song to sing along to too. If you listen to it, she performed the main singing line, then we sang the backing/repeat of what just sung (listen to the song to see what I mean).

Imogen Heap will always hold a special place in my musical heart, because she is so creative and inspiring with the way she handles her song writing, and stage performances.

Hide and Seek is probably Imogen Heap's most popular and famous track, after it was played on Radio1 (prime time BBC radio station) by Jo Whiley, as her "one to look out for track". At the time, it was probably the most alternative song played by the music station, at such a peak time. Needless to say, people fell in love with it.

This is Imogen Heap's second solo album, and features songs such as "Hide and Seek", "Just For Now" and "Goodnight and Go" - and exquisite addition to anyone's music collection

Imogen Heap rarely covers released music, but when she does, it's an absolute treat! She has covered Jeff Buckley's "Halleleljah" and Michael Jackson's "Thriller" - with outstanding beauty. Have a listen to the both of them...

I fell in love with this album as soon as I heard it - it has the most beautiful and creative background behind its creation.

Just before starting the album, Imogen Heap moved back into her childhood home - a big round house in London. Every song on the album is made up sounds, made from things around her house. She even has one song where she sings in the shower! An incredibly liberating and creative album, that only someone with a soul made of rhythm and timbre could put together. A pure musical genius, in my humble opinion.

In the first clip, you will see Imogen Heap building her song, by recording and sampling sounds then putting them on a loop to sing over. Utterly captivating, creative and just mind blowing.

You might see her sing into her wrists. Don't worry, she's not going mad. She wore microphones on her wrists to give her freedom on stage, but also to record any instruments she would play with more ease. This lady loves technology and is always pushing the envelope of musical creativity and embracing the options that advances in technology can do for her music.

All of these clips were filmed on 11th November 2010 at the Royal Albert Hall in London...and I was there...it was out of the this world, amazing!

She also loves interacting with fans, through social media and her vblogs. Imogen Heap was amongst the first celebrities to use and more importantly engage, on Twitter. She won a grammy award for her 3rd solo album, "Eclipse", and when she collected her grammy, she wore a special Twitter dress that featured a necklace that was covered in LEDs that was connected up to her twitter feed, running live around her neck...she invited fans to @ and # her, so she could take her fans with her on stage as she collected her award - what a sweetheart!
